P&F Charts - What is iCloud Syncing?

P&F Charts performs automatic syncing of most of the app’s data between all your iOS and Mac devices connected to the same iCloud account.  It works as shown in the above diagram.

All the app’s data (except for the stock prices) are kept in sync via your own iCloud account - automatically.  This means that changes made on one device will within a minute or so appear on the other without you having to do anything.

Examples of things that sync automatically:

  • Watchlists:  add, rename or delete
  • Stocks, Forex or Crypto Currencies: add, delete or move between watch lists
  • Stock Parameters: changed display name
  • Point and Figure Chart Parameters: e.g. box size and months of data to chart
  • Line Chart Parameters: e.g. SMA or EMA, display precision
  • Chart Colours: e.g. PnF chart Support Line colour, Line chart Top Fill colour

Note: the price data for a given stock is saved locally.  However it is easily updated on all devices as needed.  

Note 2: using iCloud is the default option but you can choose to store data locally rather than on iCloud.

P&F Charts - no prices?

Sometimes you may see a stock reflected in a watchlist that shows NO prices like in the example above. This happens when you have added a new stock on a different device connected to the same iCloud account.  The stock details have synced but the price data does not (by design).  Just tap on the stock and the app will automatically try and fetch all the price data from our stock supplier for you.

P&F Charts - Where does the Stock Data come from?

P&F Charts sources all of its stock data from the Alpha Vantage service.  This is an amazing service which provides a huge range of daily stock prices for stocks, indices and currencies from all over the world.  See their website for further information.  It is also important to remember that AlphaVantage update the daily prices sometime after the close of trading for a specific stock.  If you want intraday data, try using an intraday interval (e.g. hourly).  You can change this on the Parameters screen for a specific stock in your watchlists. However, it sometimes (not very often) inexplicably drops a particular stock for some period of time.  The search will say they support it (and probably did until yesterday) but will report no data available when asked for the latest prices.  Unfortunately this is completely out of our control and Alpha Vantage unfortunately does not have a support capability that can answer questions about particular stock price availability.  If this happe
